Stella number 117 of an edition of 450. This black haired Stella is quite Ascot.
She wears a black, raw silk suit with little jewelled buttons and trimmed in marabou feathers with matching feathered hat and a little clutch purse. Is a hard plastic doll made to specific factory stipulations to my design. Shes based on an amalgamation of Caprice by Caprice and Bild Lilli in body , strung on elastic like Lilli. Her shoes are moulded onto her feet and hand painted like Lilli.
SYLVAINS face is a melange of Bild Lilli but with a more snub nose and pouty mouth , based on clone dolls like Mariclare and the later version of Barbie. What would Lilli look like in 1968? Each doll was made in a strict limited edition of 450.I use elements of pre existing dolls to make characters that are new yet have familiarity. After I have painted them and style them they rarely retain any resemblance to their original inspiration and that is my intention. Like her predecessor Severine , and Lalka before that , she is destined to become a very rare doll indeed. Its now very difficult and expensive to have a factory make such old fashioned dolls in such limited numbers.
She will be a return to a version of Lalka. I will have gone full circle and then I will stop as my mission will have been accomplished and I will have expressed all I have to express through the medium of dolls as small art objects.
The process of each dolls hand finishing is the same as Lillis would have been in Germany in the 1950s. The body is first spray painted with acrylic paint in several coats. Then each face is hand airbrushed , the cheek blusher and above the eye , Smokey shadow in a variety of subtle shades. Then the faces are hand painted and sealed with a spray of clear sealant.
Its this individual hand painting that makes each doll utterly unique. I see each doll as a little 3D portrait and art piece. Her hair is then put in under a screwed in pate (like Bild Lilli) and hand styled. The hair fibre is viscose. Sometimes I use wigs that I have had custom made in a factory. Her finger nails are hand painted. Then each doll is dressed in a hand made outfit. The outfits are designed to within a discipline of loose ideas I give to my small team of seamstresses. Sylvain forms part of a trilogy of dolls. Her sister dolls are Sable and Stella.
To reiterate , each doll was made in a quantity of 450. Once these sell out they will never be reproduced. Sylvian is a strongly androgynous character.
One may be reminded of Dietrich. Stella is a younger , slightly less ambiguous character , one may be reminded of Liz Taylor. Sable is a good time girl. Think of Elsie from Chelsea from the song Life is a Cabaret.
Although each doll comes dressed by me the intention is for the collector to enjoy the dolls and impose their own style and taste onto the dolls. Each doll comes in an exquisitely designed , hard , heavy card box. Designed by Fokke Hoekman and with images photographed by Ernesto Padros Campos , these boxes look vintage and elegant and each box end is numbered with the dolls edition number and marked with her hair shade.
